Kirkman Finlay, retired life insurance executive, died suddenly at his home, 115 Harden Street, shortly after noon Tuesday. He was 63.

Although Mr Finlay's health had been impaired for many years, his death was unexpected, and he died practicing one of his hobbies, wood carving, while sitting in the den of his home.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock in Trinity Episcopal Church. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery,

Mr Finlay was born in Columbia Feb 19, 1908, the son of the Rt Rev Kirkman George Finlay and Lucy Reed Finlay. His father was the first bishop of the newly-formed Upper Diocese of South Carolina of the Episcopal Church.

Following his preparatory schooling, Kirkman Finlay entered the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee, from which he graduated in 1928. He played football and was on the tennis team. His fraternity was Phi Delta Theta.

As a young man he entered the textile business before he entered the life insurance profession in 1941. In 1959, he became a member of the Million Dollar Roundtable of the National Association of Life Underwriters.

The state of his health confined Mr Finlay largely to his home for more than 20 years, but he succeeded in maintaining a successful business from his home office.

During his active years he was a member of the Vestry of Trinity Church and taught Sunday School there. He was active in community affairs and especially in Boy Scout work. He was a member of the Cotillion Club and a former member of the Forest Lake Country Club.

Descended from Scot ancestry, he was a student of Scotland. He had recently built a mountain house near Hendersonville, NC.

Mr Finlay and Catherine McCarrel were married in 1932. Surviving besides Mrs Finlay are one daughter, Mrs Gayle O Finlay Averyt [Avery?]; one son, Kirkman Finlay Jr, both of Columbia; two sisters, Mrs Leighton Collins of Princeton, NJ, and Mrs Mead Willis of Asheboro, NC; one brother, Edward R Finlay; and three grandchildren.
