Dorothy Crook Tate was a Professor at Urbana College in Urbana, Ohio. She was the daughter of Willie Mae Newby and Dr. Compton Ney Crook. Sister to Compton Newby Crook (1908-1981) and Patti Ney Crook Mounger (1922-2006).
She received her education at Vanderbilt University where she was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in 1932 and a Masters of Arts degree in 1933. At Vanderbilt, she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and was awarded the Owen Medal for excellence in mathematics.
He teaching career Egan when she was one of a group of three resident instructors who, with a total of seven students, launched the Urbana College academic program on its rebirth. The following fourteen years that she served on the Urbana faculty saw the college grow to a fully-accredited four year institution with a student body of some seven hundred.
She was a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters and was active in the Girl Scout program in Champaign County.
Dorothy married James Harris Tate (1911-2000) on November 2, 1935 in Atoka, Tennessee.
