SUICIDE VERDICT IN CONSROE DEATH

A verdict of suicide was issued late yesterday after the body of Joseph Consroe, 59, was found hanging from a rafter in the garage, Feb. 23, 1955 at his home at 22 Taylor St.

Charles Consroe, son of the deceased, said that his father had been despondent in recent months because of illness and that he had been scheduled to go to a hospital in Sayre, Pa., today.

The Rev. John Pagano, pastor of the Christian Assembly Church and a neighbor of the Consroe's, called the police when the body was discovered shortly after 2 p.m. by Mrs. Marion VanGorder, Consroe's daughter. Mrs. VanGorder said that her father had gone to the garage about noon.

Chief of Police Michael Canestaro and Sgt. Kenneth DeMond investigated. Later District Attorney Leslie Briggs and Dr. Howard Kelley, Coroner, viewed the body. The latter issued the suicide verdict.

Mr. Consroe was born in Italy on January 19, 1896, and came to this country at an early age with his parents. He had lived in Cortland since his childhood and had been employed at Wickwire Brothers, Inc., for many years until illness struck him about a year ago.

Surviving, besides his son and daughter, are his wife, Mrs. Florence Palladino Consroe; his father, Michael Consroe; five brothers, Michael Jr. and Frank, both of Cortland; William and Henry, both of Syracuse, and Thomas Consroe of Washington, D.C.; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the McEvoy Funeral Home and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home this evening and tomorrow afternoon at their conveniences.
