James and Mary Jackson reared their family in the old Scottish Covenanter Church, which is known for its uncompromising stand for the faith of our fathers. This is according to Agnes Jackson Wilson's book on The Life of the Rev. James Renwick Jackson.
-----------------------
James and Mary were very religious people and the church they attended over the years was formed in their home. Many referred to the home as "Divinity Hall". Their last home was on Hall Street. The family were married in the Church of Ireland (Episcopalian) and sometime after their last child was baptized they switched to the Presbyterian Church. The Presbyterians from Ireland were Scots-Irish. This means that their original ancestors came from Scotland.

James Jackson is listed in Slater's Directory of 1846 where he is shown under 'Boot and Shoe Makers' in the town. In Slater's Directory of 1870 James Jackson and a John Jackson are listed as 'boot and shoe makers' in the town. They are brothers. By 1881 the Jackson name had disappeared from this listing.
