Peter Dieckman was born in Germany and was a carpenter by trade. He was 5' 6", had a light complexion, could read and write, listed his religion as Protestant and his occupation as carpenter. He enlisted on February 11, 1864 at Brooklyn, New York at age 27 as a private in Company E, 4th New York Heavy Artillery. He was discharged on August 5, 1865 at Newport, New York.

Subsequent to his discharge he resided in Saunders Co., NE in 1870 with his wife Margarette and two children. At one point, they also lived in Santa Monica, California. His pension was $10 per month.

He died from a heart attack on January 16, 1902 in Tacoma, Washington. His estate was presented for probate on June 5, 1902.  He left a widow, Maggie Dieckman, age 62, resident of Tacoma, and several children.  Petitioner was his son, Albert J Dieckman.  Petition for appointment was approved on June 23, 1902.

U. S. military record indicates an alternate spelling of Deckman. His wife, Margaret, currently has a duplicate record in FAG most likely due to misspelling of her last name.
