ADOLPH HARTER in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Jasper, Dubois, Indiana # 141714175. He was my ancestor - He was born about 1830 Germany - died: 29 Oct 1865 Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana. He was discharged from the Civil War and was returning home when he stopped in Indianapolis for the night. That evening he was found dead at the bottom of a flight of stairs. Cause unknown no witnesses, and was ruled an accidental death. His wife was denied his pension, because he "didn't died with his men" as the court ruling was stated. This was a large court case...and hurt his wife deeply, since she was without financial income. Information found in Indianapolis Newspapers.

Adolph Harter's wife was Mary Elizabeth Holthaus. They were married Oct 14, 1852 Dubois County, Indiana. In the Civil War he had enlisted twice...First as a musician, and later as a lieutenant. After Adolph's death, Mary Elizabeth (Holthaus) Harter married Reinhart Rich, a fellow friend, and Civil War musician on June 26, 1866 Dubois County, Indiana. I believe that Mary Elizabeth (Holthaus) Harter Rich is buried in Saint Joseph Cemetery, and also her second husband, Reinhart Rich. Reinhart Rich died about 1867-69. Mary Elizabeth (Hothouse) Harter Rich died about 1870. She left 6 children. 5 children by Adolph Harter, and 1 child by Reinhart Rich.

Believe Mary Elizabeth Holthaus's mother was Margaret Agnes or Mary Agnes maiden name unknown. She went by Agnes. Believe she might of remarried after the death of her first husband, and married Christopher Fritz (Frass?) 10 Aug 1847 Dubois County, Indiana. She was born about 1803 Germany and would have died after 1860. I am uncertain if Mary Elizabeth Holthaus's father died in Dubois County, Indiana. She had a brother Henry A Holthaus b. Oct 1830 Germany who later moved to Louisville, KY and raised Mary Elizabeth's children, and a sister Mary Holthaus b. abt 1842 Indiana. I found a marriage for Mary Holthaus to Henry J Kunckler - 28 Aug 1866 Dubois County, Indiana.
