LaVern Charles was born in Troy, Texas, to the late Charles William and Annie Lee (Ford) Wood. He pastored Concord Baptist Church for 25 years and worked in the Waco School system. In 1982, he retired from Paul Quinn College as the Dean of Instruction. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Weslaco.
He was preceded in death by his brother, LaMar Wood; and sisters, LaTrissa Spradley and LaNell Dickey.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Juanita Wood, of Weslaco; son, Gary Charles Wood, of Houston; daughter, Renee Wood Staines, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; grandchildren: Charles Russell Wood, of Irving, James Arthur Wood, of Houston, and Carly Danielle Chapman, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; brothers, LaDell Wood and his wife, Amanda, of Kempner, and LaMont Wood and his wife, Anita, of Dallas; sister, Lorraine Strutz, of Cedar Park; other relatives and many friends.
