1927 ~ 2014
Salt Lake City, UT-Our loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather returned to his Heavenly Father on November 7th. He fought a courageous battle with cancer with dignity and smiles for everyone. Joe was the youngest of 5 children born to Annie Doremus Richards and James Bryon Barton on December 8, 1927. Born in Ogden, he grew up in Alberquerque, Santa Fe, Denver, finally settling with the family in San Francisco in time for Joe to graduate from high school. A life-long active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he was called to the North Central States Mission, followed by 2 years in the military. His degree in engineering from UC Berkley opened the way for him to follow his passion of building homes and developing land. Joe married his soul mate, Mary Anderson, 55 years ago and together they raised 6 children in a home filled with love and happiness. He served in many leadership positions for the church, including a Bishop twice, and a Stake President. Joe always said that his two legacies were his family and the Denver Temple, which he helped bring into being and was then called as 1st counselor in the temple presidency. He and Mary were able to fulfill a mission to the San Francisco, CA area. Joe's interest in people, his kindness, and fun personality, made him a man well-loved. He was an example of faith and generosity and was a hero to us all. He is survived by his sweetheart Mary and 5 children; Laurie Hoer (Mike), Cheryl Barton, Bryon Barton (Dianna), Michael Barton (Alyssa), Katie Hoskin (Joe); along with 25 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, Taggart Barton.
Family and friends may gather on Thursday November 20th from 6-8:00pm at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park (3401 S Highland Drive, Salt Lake). Funeral Services on, November 21st held at Millcreek Stake Center, located at 4220 S 420 E, Salt Lake City, with a viewing prior to the services. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn.
