Adams Native Priest Dies In Bryn Mawr
The Rev. Peter C. Hufnagel, 76, of the Order of St. Augustine, who served as a professor, prior and pastor in Cuba, died Tuesday at 3:05 a.m. in Bryn Mawr Hospital, where he was admitted two weeks ago. He would have celebrated his 50th anniversary in the priesthood on June 8. Born in McSherrystown on August 3, 1892, Father Hufnagel was a son of the late Peter and Catherine Hufnagel Hufnagel. He attended Locust Grove Public High School and McSherrystown High School and entered Villanova Seminary in September 1909. He made his religious profession on June 20, 1913, and in 1916 graduated from Villanova College. After three years of theology, Father Hufnagel was ordained at Overbook Seminary on June 8, 1919, by the late Cardinal Dougherty, Archbishop of Philadelphia. In September 1919, he was appointed professor of mathematics at St. Augustine's College, Havana, Cuba, a position he held until he was appointed prior of St. Augustine's Convent and pastor of Santa Cristo parish. While he was pastor of Santa Cristo, the church was extensively remodeled. Father Hufnagel was called to St. Augustine's parish, Alemendares Marianao, Cuba, in 1942, and while there a new was built. He was transferred to St. Rita's Church in 1955, where he was appointed prior, and a new church was built. He remained there until all Americans under the Castro regime were urged to leave Cuba. Following a brief rest, Father Hufnagel was appointed to Resurrection Parish, Dania, Fla., where he underwent surgery at Bryn Mawr Hospital. He returned to Resurrection Parish and remained there until 1965 when ill health forced him to retire. Since that time he had been at Villanova Monastery. Surviving are seven sisters and two brothers, Mrs. John A. Smith, McSherrystown; Mrs. Edward A. Smith, Mrs. LeRoy C. Smith, Miss Gertrude C. Hufnagel, Benjamin D. Hufnagel and Mrs. Leo J. Lawrence, Hanover; Mrs. Elizabeth Sneeringer, Gettysburg; Mrs. Paul Hilterbrick Sr., Littlestown and Raymond J. Hufnagel, Tucson, Ariz. The Devine Office will be recited Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Villanova Seminary Chapel, followed by a concelebrated Mass at 11 a.m. The burial will be in Villanova Cemetery.
