George Mat Mays is his son.

This stone is in very bad shape it has been painted over with silver paint and much of the etching has chipped off.

No death record has ever been found for J.D. though Walter E. Mays, the grandson of J.D. said that J.D. had hung himself out in the barn but the exact year is unknown.

J.D.'s last child Doxie Mae Overton was born in 1895 but by the 1900 census his spouse "Adaline" was widowed.

Note that J.D. Mays spouse (Adaline) is the daughter of William Thomas Wilson and Jane (Jincy) Harp so Jane (Jincy) is my 1st cousin as she is the daughter of Benager Harp (my 4th great grand uncle), I descend thru Benager Harp's sister Nancy Harp that married Levi Bennett.
