Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend Joseph Harris "Doty" Smith returned to Our Heavenly Father on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at …

Doty was born July 7, 1919, in Sugar Salem, Idaho. He was the son of Adelaide Calaway Smith and Joseph Rolla Harris, his father, who died in 1918 seven months before Doty was born. He was raised by his stepfather, I.E. Smith, and his mom. Doty was the middle of nine siblings who have all preceded him in death.

Doty moved with his family to Montana in a horse-drawn wagon and lived in various places throughout the Jefferson Valley. Doty attended a number of schools around Whitehall and graduated from Whitehall High School in 1938. He was drafted by the Army Air Corps and served in the Philippines the later part of World War II. Doty aspired to be a mechanic and went to school in Venice, Calif., but was called back to help support his family.

He was called to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in the Central States Mission at the age of 35.

He met his wife, Berniece Fransen on a blind date set up by cousins. They were married two months later in the LDS Idaho Falls Temple on Feb. 13, 1958, and would have been married 57 years this year. They returned to Whitehall, Montana to start their life together. Doty was a successful dairy farmer and rancher, raised chickens for a while along with some custom haying and combining. Doty is survived by wife, Berniece and their four children, son, Mel (Susan), daughters, Taunja, Bridget (Lynn), and Kyra (Rick) and their 15 grandchildren and two still born grandchildren.

Doty was known for his bibbed overalls and red handkerchiefs. He had a deep love and devotion for his country and for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He loved to support the youth activities in the community and to hand out treats to the kids at church. He was known for calling people in the community on their birthdays and anniversaries and singing Happy Birthday -- or a version thereof -- to them, sometimes too early in the morning for their liking.

Dad never met a stranger in his life. We will remember him for his forgiving and nonjudgmental nature, his incredible work ethic, and his dedication to his family and friends. We know he loved the Lord and we’ll be happy to reunite with him someday in Heaven.

Funeral services will be held Saturday Jan. 17th, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Whitehall Mormon Church. Interment with military honors will follow at Whitehall Cemetery. There will be a viewing at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at K&L Mortuary Chapel in Whitehall.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Doty’s name to the Whitehall Senior Center, Box 248, Whitehall.
