In the death of Jacob Hahn which occurred at his home in Philadelphia, on Wednesday, May 16, 1900, there passed away a man who was for many years among the most active and useful business men of Clarion county, and to whose industry and keen business foresight is due much of the progress accomplished in several sections of this his home county.

He was a native of Germany coming to this county when a boy with the family of his father, J. B. Hahn and settling in Beaver township where the deceased spent the earlier years of his life on the farm and in lumbering. Later he became a member of the lumber and boat building firm of Hahn, Metzgar & Co., owning large interests at the mouth of Piney and of the firm of Hahn & Wagner at Paint Mills, Paint township, the latter named firm also owning and operating a mill and a large and valuable tract of timber and oil producing land. Mr. Hahn also engaged in the oil business along Oil Creek in the sixties, meeting with the ups and downs incident to that locality with the same calm and perfect reliance in his well directed efforts that characterized all of his undertakings.

In later years, however, his operations were mostly confined to his interests in this county, during which he acquired a comfortable fortune. He was for some time a resident of Clarion and buy it and occupied the residence comer Main street and Eighth avenue since purchased, remodeled and now occupied by F. M. Arnold. In 1874 Mr. Hahn removed to Philadelphia where he had since resided.

He was a man of kindly disposition, scrupulously honest and upright in his dealings and enjoyed the confidence and respect of all who knew him. Although he had reached the ripe old age of more than 81 years his mind was still clear and up until a comparatively short time ago he was able to give personal attention to his business affairs.

He was twice married and is survived by his widow and several children by his first wife. Among his immediate surviving relatives in this county are his three brothers, viz.: J. B. Hahn and Martin Hahn, of Beaver township and Michael Hahn, of Piney township. He is also survived by his elder brothers, Charles of Philadelphia, now in the 84th year of his age.

His remains were brought to Mt. Zion church, Piney township, where funeral services were held on last Monday, conducted by Rev. Zimbeck, assisted by Rev. B. F. Delo, of Clarion and Rev. L. Belsicker, pastor of the German Lutheran congregation of the Stone church, Beaver township, all of whom paid glowing and well merited tributes to the memory of the departed. The remains were laid to rest in the Mt. Zion Lutheran cemetery, the deceased having been for many years a faithful member and liberal supporter of that church. The funeral was largely attended by relatives, friends and acquaintances from far and near, among those from Clarion in attendance being Hon J. T. Maffett, S. K. Clarke, Esq., C. A. Rankin, E. M. Lee, R. B. Thomas and C. A. Wheelock.
