Based on census records, John Pegoda was born between 1812 and 1822 in Prussia. His ancestry is not certainly known, but he may be a part of the Pogade family that originated near Ruda, Poland in the mid to late 1700s. The best fit is a missing branch in a family tree created by Wolfgang Pogade of Berlin, Germany, possibly a long lost son or nephew of Johann Gottlieb August Pogade, born 25 May 1794.

Another possibility is that John is the Johann Pokutta who was christened on 01 Aug 1812 in Kujau, Schlesien, Prussia. Nothing certainly links our John to this baptism record, but it is a very good fit. Two concerns are obvious: 1) that he would have immigrated at 39 - a bit old to immigrate and subsequently start two families, and 2) this Johann Pokutta appears to have married a Margaretha in Kujau, Prussia and had 5 children between 1840 and 1847. It would seem unlikely he would have left a large family behind.

John left Prussia on 15 Apr 1851 on the ship Magnet and arrived in Galveston, Texas on 25 Jun 1851. He settled in Walker County, Texas and became a US citizen on 13 May 1858 in Walker County.

John first married Emily Morse (Mass, Moss) on 17 Oct 1852 in Walker County, Texas, and they had 3 children. The couple apparently divorced and John remarried to Nancy McGraw on 07 Dec 1865 in Walker County. John and Nancy had 9 children.

John died before 1910, likely in Walker County, Texas. John and Nancy's graves are marked with a single rock each (placed by his sons Marion and George) in Bath (Possum Walk) Cemetery in Walker County, Texas.
