Obituary for Florence Elizabeth Austin
The years that Florence E. Austin spent here on earth greatly resembled one of the things she loved most...quilting. She used much of her 96 years quietly stitching together a life filled with brightly colored pieces: her family, her friends, and her church community, using kindness and love to connect all of the fabrics that mattered to her most. The beautiful patchwork was completed on January 5, 2015, when Florence used her delicate fingers to pull the last thread through, giving all who knew her that final blanket to warm and comfort their souls with her love.
Florence was born on October 18, 1918 in Lounsberry (Briggs Hollow), NY, the fourth child of Hugh E. and Mira A. Tefft Austin. Her years in the first and second grades were spent at two different schools, as her father traveled to logging jobs with his horses. In June of 1927, the Austins purchased their family farm in Windham, and Florence began attending the Windham Center School. Upon completing the eighth grade there, she then went to the Nichols High School, graduating in 1937. After graduation, she helped her parents on their farm and had various babysitting jobs, and she continued to hone her exemplary skills in all forms of needlework.
In May of 1953, Florence started working at the Endicott Johnson Shoe Factory in Owego. Along with working at EJ, Florence also loved to plant flowers and work in her garden, and upon her retirement in 1980, she filled her days with working outdoors, as well as crocheting, doing cross-stitch and needlepoint, and creating beautiful quilts of all shapes and sizes that were completely hand-sewn. Memories, they say, are stitched with love, and one of the things Florence treasured most was creating quilts for her nieces and nephews when they graduated high school, got married, or had children of their own.
A day hemmed in prayer seldom unravels and Florence's church family was a solid foundation in her life. In 1934, she, along with her sisters Edith and Ruth, joined the Nichols United Methodist Church. For the past 81 years, Florence humbly devoted her time and her talents to the church, attending as often as she could, and never thinking twice about helping with dinners and the soup kitchen, as well as donating quilts, needlepoint, and all sorts of crochet-work for sales and bazaars.
With her passing, Florence leaves behind so many people who were woven and tied to her through affection and grace. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Connie Austin of Athens and Iva Austin of Jacksonville, FL, and a brother-in-law, Chauncey Hottenstein of Dushore. Florence will also be missed by many nieces and nephews, including six with whom she was very close and who helped her greatly in these last few years: Doris Powell and Kathleen Bowen, both of Windham, Jane Hottenstein of Dushore, Mary Hottenstein of Vestal, NY, William Austin of Ulster, and Robert Moore of Sayre. She also leaves behind very special friends, Linda Honnick, of Windham, and Bob and Mary Baldwin of Barton.
She was predeceased by her father, Hugh, in 1950, and her mother, Mira, in 1968, her sisters, Doris in 1931, Ruth A. Moore in 1995, Marjorie J. Hottenstein in 2003, and Edith Johnson in 2006, and her brothers, Elwin, in 1982, Frank, Sr. in 2006 and Lewis in 2006. Love is the thread that binds us all, and going to Heaven has given Florence the chance to once again be reunited with the people she loved and missed very much over the years.
Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation and time of sharing memories on Friday evening, January 9th 2015 from 6 - 8 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S.
