A telegram received by the editor of the Weekly on Friday night last from Miss Bessie Shumate, Oskaloosa, Iowa, informed us of the death of her father, Maj Thos Shumate, which occurred in that place on the 20th. The funeral took place on Saturday under the auspices of the Federal Veterans of that place, as a mark of respect to a Confederate soldier and an esteemed citizen.
Maj Shumate was a son of Bailey Shumate, deceased, and was about 58 years of age. His first wife was a daughter of Col Wm Shumate, formerly owner of Montgomery Hall, now the property of H D Peck, by whom he had three children. His second wife, who survives him with several children, was Miss Hammond, sister of the late Mrs Thos K Menifee and well known in Staunton. He had resided in Iowa for about fifteen years, where he was actively engaged in coal mining. He had been a contractor while living in Staunton and was an active business man.
Maj Shumate had many friends in Staunton and Augusta county, who will be pained to learn of his death.
