Melvin R. Birkhofer, 78, Lake Isabella, Calif., died April 30, 2007. A memorial service will be held in Lake Isabella at a later date.
He was born in Moscow on Oct. 9, 1928, a son of Ed Birkhofer and Esther (Lemkau) Birkhofer. On Jan. 8, 1946, he married Mary Wright. After serving four years in the U.S. Navy, he settled in California. They were foster parents for many years. They gave love and affection to large numbers of children needing their special parenting.
He is survived by his wife; one son, Nick, Norwalk, Calif.; a daughter, Patricia Clinton, Pahrump Nev.; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Bea Calvalege, Columbus Junction; two brothers, Howard and Ralph both of Muscatine; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Violet; and two brothers, Robert and Gerald.
