Howard E. Birkhofer, 89, of Muscatine, passed away Friday, November 29, 2013, at his home in Muscatine. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 4, 2013, at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery with full military rites. Visitation for Howard will be held on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, from 4:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Unity Point Hospice, Iowa Hospice or the Muscatine American Legion in memory of Howard. Howard Edwin Birkhofer was born on December 15, 1923, on a farm in Moscow, Iowa the son of Edward and Esther A. (Lemkau) Birkhofer. He was a 1942 graduate of Wilton High School. Howard was a proud World War II Army veteran, serving with the 17th Airborne Division, 193rd Glider Infantry, participating at the Battle of the Bulge as a medic. On March 16, 1946, Howard was united in marriage to Betty J. Askam in Muscatine. Howard retired from John Deere as a 30 year employee on January 1978. He enjoyed his family, cars, gardening and fishing.

Howard will be deeply missed by his two daughters, Nancy Jean Daniels and her husband, Jack of Muscatine and Susan Lynn Hathaway and her husband, Charles Jr. of Muscatine; five grandchildren, Tammi (Mark) Schmelzer, Alana (Shane) Miller, Angela Hathaway, Theresa (Jason) Riley and Jennifer (Alex) Stille; four great grandchildren, Jacob and Jordan Schmelzer, Jacob and Hayley Riley; step great grandchildren, Joseph and Abby Stille; one sister, Beatrice Calvelage; one brother, Ralph (Lois) Birkhofer and sister-in-law, Shirley Birkhofer.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Betty in 2009, one son, Jackie Howard in 1969, sister, Violette and brothers, Robert, Melvin (Mary) and Gerald.
