From History of Koochiching County:
Brita Erickson was born in Sweden in 1875. In 1903, she immigrated to to Cass Lake, Minnesota with her parents, Hans and Kristina Erickson. In 1905, in Cass Lake, she married Andrew Olson. While in Cass Lake, they had two children, Einar and Annie.

In 1907, the Olson family, along with Brita's parents, moved to Spooner (now East Baudette), Minnesota where Brita and her mother helped run a boarding house. Her third child, Albin, was born in Spooner.

At that time, homestead claims were available so Andrew and Hans both filed for and obtained claims in the area east of Baudette now known as Border. The men built temporary cabins and both families moved to their homesteads about 1909. On the homestead, Brita gave birth to three more children, Helmer, Elsie and Ernest. They cleared the land for farming and to sell the wood in order to buy flour, sugar, coffee and other necessities. Brita and Kristina helped by cutting the limbs off the trees felled by Hans and Andrew.

A school was built several miles away near the river and Brita made sure the children attended. They walked during the spring and fall; logs were placed to walk over the swampy areas. In the winter when the snow was deep, oxen and a stone boat (log sled) were used to take the children to school.

Brita remained in the Border area throughout her life. When she died in 1965, she was buried beside Andrew in the Riverdale Cemetery in Border.
