Newel Lewis Services
Funeral services for Newel Lewis, 62, Pocatello, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday (today) in the Matthews Mortuary in Montpelier.
Lewis died April 21 in the Bannock Memorial Hospital in Pocatello, following a long, illness.
Lewis was born January 1, 1913 in Sterling, Alberta, Canada and came to the United States when he was four years old with his parents settling in the Bear Lake Valley in Paris, Idaho. He attended school in Paris and graduated from Fielding High with the class of 1931.
He served with the U.S. Navy from 1934-1938. Worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 31 years, retiring as engineer Oct. 26, 1972. Lewis lived in Paris twenty years; moving to Pocatello in August 1958.
In addition to his work he was an active sportsman, enjoyed playing the guitar and was a gardener and all round handyman.
He married Tabitha "Ila" King December 7, 1937 in Paris, Idaho.
Survivors are his wife, Ila, Pocatello; mother, Olive Lewis, Paris; two sons, Newel D. Lewis and Wayne K. Lewis, both Pocatello; two daughters, Mrs. Claude (Jeanine) Newman, Mrs. Gary ( Marilyn) Rasmussen, both Idaho Falls; one brother, Marvin Larsen, Paris; one sister Mrs. G.H. (Merinda) Bentsen, Montpelier; two half brothers, Joe Lewis, Montpelier and Russell Lewis, Boise; five half sisters, Mrs. Delbert (Eva) Powers, Nampa; Mrs. Clinton (Lola Dean) Hill, El Monte, Calif.; Mrs. Buckley (Nelda) McDonald, West Covina, Calif.; Mrs. Don (LarRee) Peterson, Grace; Mrs. Olen (Alice) Showalter, Eceter, Calif.; 17 grandchildren.
Burial will be in the Montpelier City Cemetery.
