Delores Burrus Conner, 90, of Hatteras, NC and Raleigh, NC, died Wednesday, December 31, 2014 in Avon, NC. She was born on July 9, 1924 in Norfolk, VA, to the late Earl Palmer and Belle Harris of Norfolk, Virginia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Earl Harris, Blanche Howle, Clara Snider, Jennette Haynie and Clarence Harris. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Luther Dudley Burrus, Jr. and her daughter, Reba Burrus Stokes.
Delores is survived by her husband of 21 years, H.T. “Rough” Conner; Reba’s children, Dabni Shelton, Andrew Veal and Courtni Rush; son, Dwight Burrus and wife, Debbie and their children, Charlie Burrus and Jessica Felice; daughter, Bonnie Williams and husband, Charles and their children, Matthew Williams and Hannah Dunavant; and son, L.D. “Buddy” Burrus and his children, Caleb Burrus and Jordan Burrus.
Delores was proud to have had twenty great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
Delores served the community of Hatteras as the Postmaster where she retired with 30 years of service. She was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter for many years. As a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church she served as Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and choir member. Delores will be remembered for her alto voice. She never met a stranger and will always be remembered for her laughter and love for people and entertainment.
A memorial service will be held at Hatteras United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 1:00 PM by the Rev. Ken Davenport and the Rev. Jim Huskins. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Hatteras United Methodist Church, Discretionary Fund or the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation.
