ELMER CLARKE RIGBY was born in Newton, Utah, March 13, 1890, to George C. and Mary Clarke Rigby. He spent his boyhood days in Newton and later attended high school and college at the Utah Agricultural College in Logan. He was an avid sports enthusiast and played football for the College with Ed Brossard his good friend. He received a block letter "A", a blanket and several sweaters for his winnings and accomplishments.
In 1911 he went to England to serve as a missionary for the L. D.S. Church. After completing his mission he went to France to study French and other subjects for six months . He then returned to school at the US.A.C. to complete his education. He helped his father in the grain business. At that time his father hoped to have him take over his business. He graduated from the US.A.C.
He married LaRue Carson September 30, 1914, in the Logan Temple. Three children were born to them, two sons, Elmer C. and George Clarke, and one daughter, Alice. LaRue died in 1932. In 1933 he married Afton Ode11 in St. Anthony, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. One son was born to them, Odell F.
Upon graduation from college he served as county agricultural agent for the Bonneville County, in Idaho. Later he operated his own business known as the Elmer C. Rigby Potato Company. He shipped thousands of carloads of Idaho potatoes to eastern cities and markets.
in 1947 the family moved to California and in 1950 they came to Salt Lake City to make their home. On April , 1971, Elmer passed away after a short illness at the University Hospital in Salt Lake City. He is survived by his widow, three sons and one daughter: Dr. Elmer C. of Beverly Hills, California; George Clarke, of Winston Salem, North Carolina; Dr. Odell. F. of Salt Lake City; and Mrs. Stuart (Alice) Dunn of Provo, Utah. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, one great grandchild, six brothers and five sisters.
