A.J. BARNES DIES AT WHEEL OF CAR
Andrew J. Barnes, 70, of 1709 Whittier avenue, co-owner with W.H. Schnepp of the printing firm of Schnepp and Barnes, 412 East Adams street, died suddenly at the wheel of his car about 8:20 p.m. yesterday near the Poston-Springfield Brick Co. on South Grand avenue east.

Mr. Barnes had been working in his victory garden in the east part of the city and was returning home when stricken. Coroner W.L. Dragoo, who investigated, and who will hold an inquest, said Charles Turley of Rochester and C.W. McCoy, 2600 South Grand avenue east, noticed the car when Mr. Barnes slumped at the wheel and lost control of the car. The car was not wrecked. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at St. John's hospital.

Mr. Barnes was born Aug. 1, 1873 on a farm near Girard in Macoupin county, the son of Andrew Jackson and Amanda Palmer Barnes.

After teaching school near Divernon for several years, he came to Springfield and entered the printing business in which he engaged for over 40 years. He and Mr. Schnepp established the firm of Schnepp and Barnes in 1903.

Mr. Barnes was a charter member of the Springfield Lions club and of the First Methodist church. He was president of the Employing Printers association.

On Nov. 24, 1909, he was married to Kate Haws Newlin.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Miss June Barnes, American Red Cross in North Africa; Ens. Ruth Barnes, with the Waves in Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Frank Whitney, city; one son, Lt. Ben A. Barnes, with the U.S. army in the south Pacific; brother, H.O. Barnes, city; three sisters, Mrs. Lucretia Dodds, city; Miss Carrie Barnes, city; Mrs. Fannie McCulley, Hackensack, N.J.; one half-sister, Mrs. Inez Robinson, city.
