Vernon Ray McDaniel, Sr. age 76 of the Gratton community in Tazewell, VA died Sunday, December 21, 2014 at his home. Born May 28, 1938 at Kimball, WV he was a son of the late John and Mabel Harvey McDaniel. Mr. McDaniel was a US Navy Veteran, and in earlier years worked as a coal miner and truck driver. He was a carpet installer for 40 years, and owned and operated Ray’s Carpet Mart. He loved horses, farming, and gardening. The long years of kind and compassionate care provided by Dr. Stephen Rinehart, David Dalton, PA, and the staff of Tazewell Family Physicians helped to make the time of his illness easier, as well as the help given by Teresa Farmer during the time of need. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Clinton Wayde McDaniel; one sister, LeVarne Eader; and step father, Chester “Bud” Tabor.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Tibbs McDaniel; daughter, Rhonda Millsaps and husband, Tony of Bristol, VA and son, Ray McDaniel, Jr. of the Gratton community in Tazewell, VA; five grandchildren, Kristen Greer, Mark Dye, Dedra Jones, Brandon McDaniel and Eric McDaniel; six great grandchildren, Aleaha and Brayden Dye, Gavin and Brynlee Greer, Colton and Peyton McDaniel; one special sister in law and brother in law, Louise and Sonny Leedy; two nieces, Sherry Asbury and Pat Arny; nephews, Ronnie, David, and Tripper Babbitt.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Friday, December 26, 2014 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with the Reverend Rodney Lawson and the Reverend Jim Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA where military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the Barns Beavers VFW Post # 7136 of Tazewell, VA and the VA National Guard Honor Team of Gate City, VA. Pallbearers will be Mark Dye, Brandon McDaniel, Eric McDaniel, Wayman Pence, David Babbitt, and Tripper Babbitt. Honorary pallbearers are Mark Noel, Tony Millsaps, Eddie Dye, Ray McDaniel, Jr., Shawn Greer, and Brad Jones.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 12:30 PM on Friday.
