"A gloom passed over this community last Friday morning when it was learned that Alfred Ferris had received word that his son Edmund had committed suicide at the home of Mrs. Julia Hall near Burlington where he was employed. Mrs. Hall was away from home Thursday afternoon and on her return found his body hanging in the barn, although it would scarcely be called hanging as his feet were resting on the floor. Edmund was a very ambitious young man, and since his severe illness last winter his health has been very poor, there being times that it would be necessary for him to quit work entirely. At such times he had been heard to remark 'that if he could not work he did not care to live any longer.' He was twenty-nine years old. The funeral was held at the home of his father in this place on Saturday afternoon and was largely attended. The Rev. F. B. Parsons officiated and spoke words of comfort and cheer to the mourning friends. He leaves a father, a step-mother, two brothers, Charles of this place and Elmer now in the army, and an only sister Mrs. Frank Wilson of Flycreek, all who deeply mourn his untimely death.--[Westville reporter." ["The Otsego Farmer" (Cooperstown, NY), June 10, 1898, p. 5]
