Son of David Edward Knight and Sarah Grace Toms. Grandson of Reverend James Knight, who was a circuit riding preacher for the United Brethren Church. James Knight was married to Adaline Cornelius Scaggs. James also served for the Union in the Kansas Cavalry during the Civil War.

Joseph married Alberta Gertrude Schmotz May 11, 1928. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alberta Schmotz Knight, of the home; a son, Gerald Knight of Lenexa, Kansas; a daughter, Mrs. JoAnne Hart of Prairie Village, Kansas; a brother, David Knight of Mulvane, Kansas; four sisters, Mrs. Thelma Rhodes of Howard, Kansas, Mrs. Wanda Grisham, Mrs. Ruby Scheller and Miss Ruthaleen Knight, all of Basehor, Kansas; and three grandchildren.

Interred Jan. 31, 1970.
