Mary Emma (nee Sheets) Byers, daughter of Jacob and Sarah Ann (nee Weidenhamer) Sheets, sister of Clara, Sarah Jane, Katherine, Izora, Edward, William, Anna, Harry, and Minnie Sheets. The family was from Northumberland and Snyder Counties, Pennsylvania(obit below erroneously indicates she was born in Reading, PA); a number of the siblings had moved to Indianapolis, Indiana by 1900.

Emma was married to David A. Byers, who died in Indianapolis in 1927; she was the mother of Evelyn Mae (nee Byers) Earp, and grandmother of Evanson Byers Earp and Leon Sutcliffe Earp.

Mrs. Emma Byers of Indianapolis died at 10:55 o'clock Sunday morning at the Decatur and Macon County hospital. She was seventy-nine years old. Her death was caused by pneumonia. Mrs. Byers, who is well known in Decatur, came here a month ago to visit the family of her grandson, L.S. Earp, 1343 West Forest avenue, and was taken ill after her arrival here. Mrs. Byers was born in Redding, Pa. in 1852. She was a member of the Methodist church in Indianapolis. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. L.F. Earp of Indianapolis and the grandson, L.S. Earp of Decatur. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Anna Hugo of Buffalo, N.Y. and Mrs. Edward Shects? of Indianapolis. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Burial will be in Crown Hill cemetery, Indianapolis.
