Matthew served in the Civil War in 134th Reg of Ohio National Guard. After the death of Louisa, Matthew deserted his family and the younger children lived in homes of neighbors. Eppy and Jesse were raised by their Shelton kin in Salina KS. Enroute back to Ohio, Matthew bought some land in Indiana but soon sold it. He appears on the 1880 census with his mother in Logan Co IN. He returned to KS, married and divorced Lydia, and was living with daughter Eppy on the 1900 census.
