Helen "Ellen" O'Donnell Haxton was born in Blairgowrie, Scotland to Connell O'Donnell from Donegal, Ireland and Catherine Hoban of County Mayo, Ireland. Helen was one of 10 children. She married John Haxton on 6 Feb 1893 at St. Stephen's RC Church in Blairgowrie, Scotland. The witnesses for their marriage were Michael O'Donnell (older brother of Helen and Joann Haxton (older sister of John). They were married by Father John Malcolm and they named their first son after him. Together they had 9 children (8 boys and 1 girl): John Malcolm, William, Thomas Crumbley (named after the priest Helen's sister Bridget cared for), James Michael, Catherine, Leo, Philip Stewart, Francis Claude and Edward Hughes (he was named after Helen's sister Sarah's husband Edward "Ned" Hughes). All of the children were born in Scotland. Helen sailed from Glasgow, Scotland with 7 of her children (John, James, Catherine, Leo, Stewart, Claude and Edward and their dog Roy) on the Numidian and arrived in Boston Massachusetts on 29 Oct 1913. Helen returned to Scotland to visit her family in 1929 with her daughter Catherine and son Francis Claude on the Leviathan.
