Obituary:
Gertrude Mitchell Tillman, age 103, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2003 in Austin. Her lifetime spanned parts of three centuries.
She was a long time resident of Austin and member of the Congress Avenue Baptist Church and Creedmoor Chapter No. 607, Order of Eastern Star. She was born August 4, 1899 in Waller County to Richard G. Mitchell and Mollie Hannah Tompkins Mitchell.
As a youth she helped her father tend cattle. She created her brand and later sold her own small herd to pay for her college education. After receiving a teaching certificate from Sam Houston College, she started her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse. She later received a bachelor's and a master's degree in education from the University of Texas.
She taught all grades throughout her life, retiring from Oak Hill Elementary School at age 65. She was married May 16, 1924 in San Antonio to William Charles Tillman, who preceded her in death. Her sons, William Charles Tillman, Jr. and Garnett Mitchell Tillman, Sr.; grandson, Garnett Mitchell Tillman, Jr.; and great-grandson, Jackson Sean McKeon, have also preceded her in death.
She is survived by son, Winston Terrell Tillman and his wife, Beverly of Roswell, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Ann Tillman of Arkadelphia, Arkansas; six grandchildren; eleven great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Friday, July 25, 2003 at the funeral home.
