A son of Townsend and Sophia (Stearns) Dickinson, Amos grew up in rural Dearborn Co., IN where he learned the crafts of successful farming and carpentry from his father.

Amos married Indiana "Nan" Palmerton Dec. 18, 1842 in Dearborn Co., the couple relocating in Decatur Co., IN near the village of Milford shortly thereafter, where, in 1845, his stock mark was registered as "a crop and slit in the left ear."

Three daughters were born to this union, Ermina, Emeline and Cordelia. The youngest daughter died in infancy.

An indenture deed from John and Ermina Palmerton to Amos Dickinson for fifty acres of land in Decatur Co., IN was entered into record July 24, 1850, suggesting that the date of death on Amos' headstone might be erroneous. It is possible that Amos actually died 8 August 1851. His widow remarried in March of 1852.
