William Benedetti

NORTH ADAMS -- William Benedetti, 88, of 41 Hathaway St. died yesterday at his home following about a month of failing health.

Born in the Hoosac Tunnel section of Rowe on Jan. 17, 1912, son of Severino and Elizabeth Rosa Benedetti, he attended schools in Hoosac Tunnel Village and graduated from Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls in 1931. He moved to North Adams with his family in 1931 and graduated from the former Bliss Business College in 1933.

He was employed by the former Arnold Print Works in North Adams until it ceased operations and then transferred to the Jones Division of the Arnold Print Works in Adams.

He passed the Massachusetts policeman's examination while serving as a military substitute with the North Adams Police Department at the beginning of World War II and was appointed a reserve officer in the department in 1942. In 1948, he was appointed a permanent patrolman. From October 1974 until his retirement in 1977, Benedetti was assigned as records officer. He retired with more than 35 years of service. In 1974, he and his brother-in-law, Officer Louis Zocchi, were given the "Officers of the Year" award.

Mr. Benedetti was a lifelong communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church and a member of the Massachusetts Police Association, the Hairpin Turners Square Dance Club, AARP, a member and past secretary of the Trentino Club, a member and past secretary for the Tyrolese Mutual Aid Society, and a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles of North Adams.

He leaves his wife, the former Anita Mary Sartori, whom he married Sept. 3, 1938; two daughters, Judith Noel of North Adams and Nanci Cirone of West Lebanon, N.H.; two sons, Donald W. Benedetti of Natick and Robert A. Benedetti of McLean, Va.; four sisters, Erminia Zocchi, Mary Caffrey, Dosolina Law and Alma Benedetti, all of North Adams; two brothers, Henry Benedetti of North Adams and Rudolph Benedetti of Ormond Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services will take place Saturday, Jan. 29, at 10 a.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:45 At St. Anthony of Padua Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., are tomorrow, Jan. 28, from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the St. Anthony Building Fund through the funeral home. Mr. Benedetti also leaves nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. A sister, Livia Primmer of Williamstown, died May 27, 1996.
