Mildred Nelles, a 70 year resident of Mount Vernon, passed away November 24, 2014 at Skagit Valley Hospital. She was born on May 16, 1921 in Glendive, Montana to John and Ellen Holbeck. She went to school in Victoria Heights and Stanwood, Washington. She married Walt Nelles in August 1944, and they lived and farmed west of Mount Vernon for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walt, her parents, John and Ellen Holbeck, her brothers, Eilert and Jim Holbeck, and her sister, Paula Ogden. She is survived by her daughters: Linda Brydges (Ross) of Mount Vernon; Lori Grobman (Bob) of Charleston, S. Carolina; and Heidi Havens (Jeff) of Arlington, WA.; grandchildren: Brian Brydges of San Rafael, California; Kim Brydges of Boise, Idaho; and Shannon Heininger (Jack) of Lake Stevens, WA; great-grandchildren: Andi and Samantha Heininger. Mildred was a busy homemaker with gardening, canning, cooking and helping with farm chores. She could drive a tractor and milk cows an active partner in farming with her husband. She was a wonderful, caring mother to her three daughters. Mildred had many talents. As a girl she loved to play guitar, sing and yodel with her brother Jim. She was an exceptional athlete and especially enjoyed playing baseball and swimming at Pilchuck Creek. She loved to take her daughters swimming at Bay View and was always supportive of any sports or activities in which her daughters or grandchildren were involved.Mildred was well loved by her family and will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by us all. A memorial service will be held at Kern Funeral Home, Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 1:00pm.
