Jess K. Kerr was born November 28, 1895, near Brodbeck's, Pa., and died October 5, 1948, aged 52 years, 10 months, and 7 days.
The entire Stone Church community was saddened by the death of this well-known and estimable citizen and devoted churchman. He was equally esteemed as a successful farmer, a widely-read student, a valuable citizen, and a consecrated Christian. In the death of Mr. Kerr the pastor and his family have lost a dear friend; in whose home there was ever a hearty welcome and a genial fellowship. As a member of St. Jacob's (Stone) Evangelical and Reformed Church and Sunday School, his record is good and true. He became a baptized member of the congregation December 29, 1895, under the ministration of Rev. Franklin A. Guth. He became a member of the Sunday School in early boyhood. He became a confirmed member of the congregation on October 28, 1911, during the ministry of Rev. N. W. Sechler. He was a member of the church choir for a number of years. He was married to Miss Hattie M. Deveney, June 1, 1922, by the present pastor. He served as deacon of the congregation from 1924 to 1926, and as elder from 1932 to 1935. He taught the Never Weary Sunday School class for 26 years. He entered the army of the United States on September 20, 1917, and served until February 20, 1918, when he was discharged as a corporal. He was a member of the American Legion Post 403, Glen Rock, Pa. He was a director of the Maryland Cooperative Milk Producers; a member of the Knights of Pythias, Glen Rock, Pa., and the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Company. All these activities bespeak for him as having lived a busy and useful life.
His funeral services were held on Friday afternoon, October 8, 1948, from his late home and at the Stone Church. The services were largely attended. The funeral text was Matt. 24:46. Burial was made in the Stone Church cemetery.
