Lewis S. Kerr was born February 1, 1869, and died May 17, 1933, aged 64 years, 3 months, and 16 days.
About a year ago he began to complain of heart trouble with which the physicians who attended him were helpless. Since last fall he spent most of his time in bed and his condition grew gradually worse until death relieved him of his sufferings. Because of his position as rural mail carrier out of the Brodbeck post office for 30 years, and his connection with various organizations he had a wide acquaintance of friends. He had been retired from the mail service on November 1, 1932. He was a highly respected citizen of the Stone Church community and the entire community unites to mourn his death. He was a useful citizen, a devoted husband and father, and a great lover of children. It was a delight to visit him in his home and to enjoy the hospitality that was so whole-heartedly dispensed. It is estimated that upwards of 2000 people came to see him during his period of illness which shows the esteem in which he was held. He was a faithful member of St. Jacob's (Stone) Reformed Church and Sunday School, and his pastor had no better friend and supporter. It will seem strange in the church and the community and the home not to see him again, to hear his words of greeting and welcome. Outside of his family no one will miss him more than his pastor. This tribute we sincerely pay to his memory and deeply sympathize with the family out of whose bosom he has been removed. May God comfort them all and because of this bereavement draw us all nearer to Himself.
The funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon, May 20, 1933, with brief services at his late home and the concluding services and burial at the Stone Church. It is estimated that 1200 people were in attendance at the church. Rev. W. H. Ehrhart read the Scripture lesson, while his pastor preached the sermon based on the text, John 12:26, the theme being "The Rewards of Service." Interment was made in the new cemetery.
