15-YEAR OLD BOY DIES, 9 INJURED IN ACCIDENT
Cleveland,Miss. Aug.6...William Aubron Jenkins,15 year old Beulah youth was injured fatally Sun. morning in a highway accident five miles west of here.
Nine others,including one Negro, were seriously injured.
Services for young Jenkins will be held at the Beulah Cemetery at 4 Mon. afternoon.
Four ambulances took the white persons to Cleveland City Hospital.The Negro was taken to a hospital at Mound Bayou.
STREWN OVER AREA
All 10 were either unconscious or semi-conscious when ambulances arrived,according to Patrolman Harvey Swindall, who investigated. He said the injured were strewn over a 25
yard radius area by the terrific impact that completely demolished the pick-up truck occupied by the white persons and the car driven by the Negro. "It was one of the worst smash-ups I've ever seen," said the patrolman, "and I'd just bragged yesterday about not having had to report a serious accident in my territory since Feb."
In the local hospital are Mr.& Mrs.W.F. Jenkins of Beulah, parents of the dead boy, and their three remaining children; Tommy 5,Charles Ray 3,and Dessie Rhee 1; and Mr. & Mrs.Arthur Ford and their 3 mo. old son of Charleston. Mr.Jenkins, driver of the pick-up, is the least seriously injured. Mr. Ford is in a critical condition.
The patrolman said the Negro,James Johnson is in critical condition at Mound Bayou. The officer said Johnson was apparently driving at a terrific speed and his car had crossed the center markings on the hi-way and plowed into the pick-up which had been driven off onto the shoulder of the hi-way in an effort to avoid a crash when the driver saw the speeding car approaching on the wrong side.
A witness said the car "must have been going 80 or 90" when he crashed into the pick-up. Manslaughter charges will be preferred against the Negro.
NOTE: This boy was my cousin and he was standing in the back of the pick-up (facing to the back). He had been walking to visit a friend and his family stopped and gave him a ride.
