Abby June Botkin passed away in Reno, NV, at Tahoe Pacific Hospital on Nov. 16 after a valiant fight to battle an infection that started in her knee. After five months in the hospital, her spirit never wavering, the infection spread, and her organs could no longer sustain life. With Bart by her side, she went peacefully.

Abby was born Feb. 20, 1959, in Pinedale to Fred and Barbara Boyce. She had three siblings, Noni, Fred and Theresa. Childhood stories at family gatherings were always abundant. Abby attended local schools in Pinedale before moving on to Rock Springs, where she attended college at Western Wyoming Community College. Her studies in geology stemmed from her love of the land and rocks. Geology was her best category in trivia.

College is where Abby met Bart. They married Feb. 5, 1983, while living in Rock Springs. From there they moved to Sheridan and then later moved to Winnemucca, NV, in 1996 just in time for Jesse and Jason to start the first day at a new school. While Bart enjoyed moving from place to place wherever work took him, Abby decided Winnemucca is where she would stay put to raise her family.

Abby was very active in the community. She was den mother for the boys’ Cub Scouts; she belonged to the Does Club for many years, bowled with Spare Time Match Club, acted in several plays with White Sage Theater group and enjoyed book discussions at the Humboldt County Library Book Club. She loved the outdoors from Wyoming to Nevada and beyond, availing herself at every opportunity to be outside camping, four-wheeling, shooting or just relaxing at the lake. Many great memories were made in all these places and more, as well as many great friends who will cherish the bonds.

Abby’s greatest accomplishments were her children Jesse and Jason. They have brought her much joy over the years and several grandchildren she got to enjoy for such a short time. In her most recent outing, Bart took her out in a wheelchair and she got to buy birthday gifts for the grandkids, see a movie and even enjoy a dinner date with Bart. She was so happy as she relayed that weekend and excited at the possibility of returning home soon.

Abby is survived by her loving husband, Bart, who has been at her side through it all, cherishing her always; her sons, Jesse (Christina) and Jason (Amanda); her grandchildren, Jason, Hannah, James and Demetri, with one on the way; her mother, Barbara; her siblings, Noni (Hal) and Fred (Sheila); and many other nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws and fabulous friends. She is preceded in death by her father, Fred; her sister, Theresa; and her grandson, Bradley.

Abby always had interesting conversations no matter the crowd. She led an amazing life full of adventure with good humor and a kind heart. Our lives have been blessed and our hearts touched by Abby. She will be missed by all who were lucky enough to have known her.

Memorial services for Abby will be tomorrow at noon at St. Paul’s Catholic church, 350 Melarkey Street, Winnemucca, with gathering immediately following in the community room of St. Paul’s for family and friends. In addition, there will be a celebration of life at Spare Time Bowl from 7-10 p.m.
