In Loving Memory of Lydia "Nellie" Saunders...

The headstone for Nellie Saunders says she died January 13, 1908. Only one person named Saunders died in California on that day - Lydia E Saunders. Her death certificate says she was born May 10, 1878 (the year being off on certificate or headstone is common) in Iowa and died at 9am January 13, 1908 in Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. The informant was husband Charles Saunders and she was buried in Long Beach Cemetery on January 13. Her father is listed as D.P. Potter of Iowa. She lived in California for 13 years. Los Angeles City Certificate No. 131, Volume 22. Transcribed by Glenn Morrow.

Nellie and Lydia appear to be the same person. I haven't found a source that shows that Lydia had the nickname "Nellie".

Note: Her father's surname appears to be an error. The family's censuses in Little Sioux, Woodbury, IA, in 1880 and 1885 show his name as D.P. Thayer. Delos/Deloss P. Thayer in Long Beach and Tulare, CA censuses. Her mother's name shows up very differently in 1880 census as Sarah A. and in her brother Edward Thayer's marriage record it gives his mother as Seberie Mcgan. Cemetery transcription has Sebera Thayer. See her Find A Grave page in Oto, Woodbury, Iowa, for timeline of spouse's names for Deloss Potter Thayer.

Her father Deloss Potter Thayer's censuses are a bit confusing with his wife being called something different in 1870, 1880 and elsewhere. If anyone has any sources like marriage records for their children that may list parents' names, please get in touch.

Obituary:
Los Angeles Herald, Vol. 35 Num. 104, Tuesday Morning, Jan. 14, 1908:
LONG BEACH,
Mrs. Charles Saunders, who died this morning in the Good Samaritan hospital, Los Angeles, is survived by her husband and two children, a son and a daughter, who live at 944 Atlantic avenue., this city. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.P. Thayer of this city.

Note: It's curious why her obit says daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.P. Thayer of this city. His wife in 1908 was not her mother.

Note: Lafayette and Sarah Saunders' 1900 census has a daughter listed as Nettie b. May 1877, age 23 and single. She is not in their 1910 census. No daughter besides Frances b. 1879-1880 is listed in 1880 census. So who is this Nettie? Death certificate for Lydia E. Saunders gives Charles Saunders as informant and D.P. Thayer as father. and the death date matches Nellie Saunders' headstone inscription. This burial has to be for his wife and not a sister. Very curious that Lydia Thayer's birth month and year is May 1877 which is the same as the Nettie Saunders listed as daughter of Lafayette and Sarah Saunders in 1900 census.
