James was the married son of Emanuel Anderson, also a native of Georgia. While attempting a burglary, he was killed by Officer William Everett Oliver, a member of the Winchester Police Department. A coroner's inquest was held and the jury's verdict stated that Mr. Anderson's death was justifiable, as it happened while Officer Oliver was in the course of performing his duty as a policeman. Mr. Anderson's occupation was listed, on his death certificate, as "Burglar", which was probably added by the registrar and not reported, as such, by the informant for the document.
