Nicholas Barker (1805-1886) was born in Randolph County, North Carolina to Enoch Barker (1776-1848) and wife, Elizabeth Davis (1782-1834). He was a birthright member of The Society of Friends.

On the 8th of November, 1827 at the Holly Spring Friends meeting house in Randolph County, NC he became the husband of Catharine Cox (1806-1896). Catharine was the daughter of Nathan Cox (1762-1842) and wife, Catharine Moffitt (1765-1848). She was also a birthright member of The Society of Friends. Both the bride and groom's parents attended this marriage as it was recorded in the records for Holly Spring Meeting minutes. Nicholas was an elder for the last twenty-two years of his life in the Holly Spring MM. At his passing it was said that he was a quite man with a peaceful soul and possessed a deep religious conviction.

Nicholas and Catharine made their home in Pleasant Grove Township, Randolph County, NC. It was there that Catharine gave birth to eight children:

1. Jonathan Barker (1828-1850)

2. Elizabeth Barker (1830-1852)

3. Mary Barker (1832-1923). She married Thomas Hinshaw (1831-1925).

4. Simeon Barker (1835-1912). He married Ruth Hinshaw (1836-1896).

5. Ezra Barker (1838-1929). He married Mary Ellen Stalker (1845-1920).

6. Cyrus Barker (1840-1895). He married Hannah Mendenhall (1846-1926).

7. Nathan Barker (1843-1925). He married twice; first to Melicent Hinshaw (1847-1880) and second to Mary Jane Upton (1858-1931).

8. Amy Catherine Barker (1846-1925). She married Jacob Holton Craven (1845-1922). Both of them went by their middle names; Catherine and Holton.
