The Rosary Service for Gerald "Jerry" Jacobs, age 59, of Pierre, formerly of Morristown, will be 10:30am Thursday, March 2, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lemmon followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am. Fr. Brian Fawcett will officiate with burial in Greenhill Cemetery.
Serving as casketbearers are Larry Jacobs, Neil Fike, Tony Puchany, Tom Leingang, Mark Jacob, Dale Haselhorst, and Scott Jacobs.
GERALD DEAN JACOBS "Jerry" was born October 30, 1946 at Elgin, ND to Raymond and Olive (Fike) Jacobs. He attended grade school at Morristown and St. Mary's School in Lemmon. Jerry was an altar boy for many years because he was so small and he loved it. Following his 8th grade graduation, he attended Lemmon High School graduating with the Class of 1964. During his junior and senior years, he worked after school and weekends at Nodak Farm & Home Supply, continuing to work there for an additional year following his graduation. In 1966, a bridge was being built on the Cedar River 1 mile from his parent's home. Jerry applied for work with Industrial Builders Inc. of Fargo. This was the beginning of what would be a 39 year career that encompassed many unique, challenging, and always rewarding projects. In the late 1960's, he worked on a Corps of Engineers project in Gering, NE for several years, on a flood control project in Lincoln, NE, and then a dam repair project in Farmington, NM. For the next several years he did many trenching jobs across the United States. One of the most memorable deep trenching projects was at Oakes, ND in the 1980's. Jerry was a Superintendent on the majority of IBI's marine projects throughout the years. The projects varied from replacing transmission line foundations in South Dakota lakes for Western Area Power Administration, to installing a 70-foot deep cofferdam in the Missouri River at Williston, ND, to a flood control project in West Des Moines, IA; to the Emergency Water Intake Relocation project at Parshall, ND in 2004. He installed a landmark 3 mile pipeline river crossing through Lake Sakakawea and made construction history on the Canadian-US CO2 construction project. Jerry would take on any challenge a project would offer. He had a great rapport with his people and they loved to work with him, many following him all over the states for projects that involved long periods of time away from home. He enjoyed the construction business and the satisfaction of a job well done. He earned numerous awards and was recognized throughout his career for his accomplishments to the construction industry. Jerry read everything he could get his hands on. He even read the dictionary for many hours at a time and acquired great knowledge on many subjects. He loved the great outdoors and the type of work he did. In his father and mothers eyes, he was everything a son should be. He was married to Linda Haley in May of 1968 and they had two children, Scott and Brenda. In 1980 he was married and they had two children, Derek and Nic. Jerry was reacquainted with a childhood friend Vallerie Paranto. She was the love of his life and Jerry was the first boy that ever held her hand and it was because she had to go to church, and he was the altar boy. Together they spent many times camping, boating, a fishing. He was a great snow skier and was on a ski patrol team. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and was a Harley Davidson enthusiast and enjoyed his many trips through the Black Hills and the Sturgis Rally. He learned to jitter bug and enjoyed dancing. Jerry enjoyed attending the Boss Cowman Rodeo and celebration and visiting with his classmates and coming home to the farm. But most of all he loved his family and his grandchildren were very near and dear to his heart. Jerry and Vallerie moved to Pierre in 1995 where they continued to spend their years together. He married Vallerie (Paranto) Jones on September 8, 2005 at Deadwood. They loved traveling, especially to Jamaica.
He was diagnosed with cancer in June 2004 and has been battling it since. Jerry passed from this life early Friday morning February 24, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre at the age of 59 years, 3 months, 24 days.
