William Alexander Barber was born to Alexander Barber & Ester Jackson; in Chester County, SC. He descended from an early Virginia, African American parent. DNA matches reveal some of the family remained in Virginia. His father Alexander, was brought to the Carolinas. The slaveholder John Barber came from Ireland in 1772. He was given a land grant in 1773. He first lived in Chester County, SC; but moved to York County, SC., and purchased slaves there by 1820. He and his wife had eight children.
