Charles Le Clere Simplot......was born April 24, 1838, in Dubuque. As a Young man, he was engaged in mining. He served from 1861-1863 in the Iowa State Militia, joining the 46th Iowa Volunteers on May 2, 1864......discharged honorably September 23, 1864, having met the terms of his enlistment.....In April of 1867, Charles married Mary Ellen Bonson (born Dubuque, c. 1844), daughter of Richard Bonson.....They had five children - Susan, Henry, Jane, Charles Richard, and Benjamin- all whom died in their youth, excepting only Charles Richard Simplot....
The children of Mary Ellen Bonson Simplot and Charles Le Clere Simplot were stalked by the whie plague. Jane Burton Simplot died when she was sixteen, Fred died a year later, and the next year twenty-one-year-old Susan died. Thus did consumption, the phthisis, hectic fever - TB went by many names - ravage this generation of Simplots.
