Born the youngest son of Hugh ALEXANDER and Martha EDMISTON,on the Sherman Valley farm, near Landisburg, on the waters of Sherman's Creek. Toboyne Twp. (then Madison), Cumberland (now Perry) Co., PA. Note: This is approx. 15 mi. northwest of Carlisle

1787/8 Married Jemima PATTERSON in Cumberland County, Penn. Shortly after their marriage they removed to the Tuscarora Valley (now Juniata Co.), where he established himself as a prosperous farmer. He laboured faithfully for about 40 years with the Rev. John COULTER in the Lower Tuscarora Church (Beale Twp., in present day Academia, Juniata Co.), the oldest church in the Huntingdon Presbytery, being organized in 1763.

ca. 1800 One of the founders of the Tuscarora Academy, which had its origins in a Latin class, or classical school, taught by the Rev. John Coulter, in a room of the house of Hugh ALEXANDER, until a very primitive building was erected for its accommodation.

27 April 1831 Lower Tuscarora Temperance Society organized. Roll of officers and members includes names of Hugh ALEXANDER and Jemima Alexander.
