A second generation African American, Rebecca's grandmother, named Rebecca "Beck" Amos was born in Guinea, West Africa. Beck was kidnapped from her home and enslaved in Chilmark, MA, on Martha's Vineyard. She had three children, one of whom, Nancy, was the mother of Rebecca Michael. There is not a lot of information available about Rebecca Michael, though she was jailed twice as a girl for theft and debt. The complaintant was her own mother, Nancy. Rebecca's main claim to fame is that she was the mother of the first African American whaling captain, Captain William Martin, who's house is still standing near where he is buried on Chappaquiddick.
