Kenneth J. Baxter Jr. of Marblehead, an engineer and a veteran, died Wednesday at Salem Hospital. He was 78.

Mr. Baxter was born in Cherry Valley, N.Y. He graduated from Sharon Springs High School in 1943 and received a degree in engineering from Tri-State University in Angola, Ind.

During World War II, he served in the Army as an engineering technician on the Manhattan Project.

Mr. Baxter worked as an engineer at General Electric Co. for more than 40 years, spending most of that time at Aircraft Engine Group in Lynn. After his retirement, he worked as a ski instructor at Killington Ski Resort for 10 years.

In 1994, he received certification as an associate of the Professional Ski Instructors of America. He was a member of the Vorlage Ski Club for more than 50 years, where he held the office of president for many years. In 2003, he was awarded honorary lifetime membership for his service to the club.

Mr. Baxter was a superb sailor and longtime member of Corinthian Yacht Club. In 1984, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Yachting Award by the Yacht Racing Union of Massachusetts Bay for aiding a competitor who was dismasted in a squall during an ocean race in the Gulf of Maine.

He was a lifetime member of the United States Power Squadron. He taught boating safety classes for the organization for many years and was a past commander of the local squadron.

Mr. Baxter was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and particularly enjoyed hiking in the mountains of New England. In his elder years, he was an active member of the Top of the Hill Gang.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Bishop); a daughter, Gail Haskell; a son, Jay; and two grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Andrew's Church, Marblehead.

Burial will follow in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead.
