Mary Ellen Snider was born in Ireland, immigrating with her parents (Patrick and Catherine Snider) and sister (Bridget Snider Kelley). Mary Ellen married James Daugherty on August 10, 1854, in Binghamton, New York. They arrived in Iowa in 1858, settling in St Johns Township, Harrison County, Iowa.
Mary Ellen and James were the parents of twelve children, seven surviving childhood.
