Robert Daugherty grew up in exciting times and decided he did not want to be a farmer. He was interested in mining, went to the Colorado School of Mines and became a mine superintendent at the Homestake Gold Mine, Lead, South Dakota. His mining expertise earned him a trip to the diamond mines in South Africa to study their methods and bring back ideas that could be used in gold mining.
Following recovery from the Spanish flu in 1918, he moved to Omaha, Nebraska.
He was a tall man, smoked cigars, enjoyed a good conversation and could fix anything, but he never drove a car!
