Carroll is lovingly remembered by his children, Susan Garnett (Bob) of Cross Lanes, Patricia Ash (Glen) of Cross Lanes, Donald Ash (Yvonne) of St. Albans and Ronald Ash of St. Albans. He had two grandchildren, Samantha Dillenback (Ben) of Chesterfield, Va., and Stephen Ash (Kristen) of Milton. He had two great-grandchildren, Caleb, 6, and Isaiah, 2, with one new great-grandchild expected in May. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Carroll and Minta were married in Charleston on Jan. 29, 1955. He graduated from Sistersville High School in 1943 and West Virginia University School of Engineering in 1947. After completing his degree, he served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant while stationed in Japan during the Korean War. Upon returning from his military service, he worked for the West Virginia Department of Transportation designing structures and as a bridge inspector. He started working for Trojan Steel Company in 1953 and retired in 1989 as executive vice president of engineering. He then became a real estate agent for Century 21. He returned to Trojan Steel Company and retired from there as president in 1995. Carroll was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tyler Mountain and served as a trustee, Sunday school teacher and deacon. He served as treasurer for the Tyler Mountain Volunteer Fire Department for many years.
The family would like to thank Hospice and Gentiva Services for their support during his illness, and give a special thank you to his caregivers, Amanda, Sonja, Kasi, Mary, Jackie and Johnna, for their loving care.
The visitation will be held at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, 5233 Rocky Fork Road, Cross Lanes, WV 25313, on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 11 a.m., with visitation prior to the service.
