Alice V. Herbold, 87, died Wednesday morning, March 22, 2006 at Heritage Manor.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at the First Lutheran Church in Newton, with Rev. Howard Vrankin officiating. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Friday, March 24, at the Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church or in Alice's name.

Alice was born on May 21, 1918 in Chariton, IA, to John Franklin Masters and Myrtle Viola Christina Blankenberg. She graduated high school in New Sharon, with the Class of 1937. She had lived in Newton most of her life and was a sales clerk at Sears before her children were born. Alice married Howard H. Herbold on February 2, 1946 in Wathena, KS.

Alice was a member of First Lutheran Church; Hospital Aux.; RSVP; Jasper County Historical Society; Jasper County Senior Citizens; and 3rd Armor Division Association with Howard. She enjoyed her family and also sewing, reading, crafts and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Gladys Jordan; and brother, Walter Masters. Alice is survived by her husband, Howard H. Herbold of Newton; son, Hal Herbold of Des Moines; daughter, Valli R. Herbold Childers of Columbia, MO; grandson, Eric Herbold Childers; and sister, Francesca Cairo of Des Moines.
