Elizabeth was a quilt enthusiast and avid collector. In the early half of the 20th century, she began collecting pre-19th century quilts from Virginia, Maryland, and South Carolina. They were left to her daughter, Susan Lewis Cockrell, who gave them to museums throughout the West in her mother's memory. Cockrell’s only request was that the quilts be studied and enjoyed, which they continue to be to the present day.

Married Fulton Hamilton Lewis, 3 Jun 1897 in Washington, DC. Lived at 5020 Palisades Lane, NW in Washington.

1. Susan, b. 5 Apr 1899; m. James Knox Cockrell.
2. Fulton, Jr., b. 30 Apr 1903, d. August 21, 1966; m. Alice Huston, daughter of Claudius Hart Huston, chairman of the Republican National Committee.
3. [Maj. Gen.] Millard, b. 8 Dec 1906, d. 13 Feb 1993; m. first, Dorothy Ray; m. second, Anne Noyes.
4. Elizabeth Hamilton, b. 10 Feb 1909, d. 24 Jan 1911.
